Three Whimsies

For unaccompanied Oboe

Between 1963 and 1965, Freda Swain appears to have experienced a burst of creativity in her oboe writing. No fewer than five pieces resulted during this period, including this short collection.

Composed in 1965, the purpose for which Swain created them is unknown. Having previously written significant pieces for Sigurd Rascher (saxophone) and Frederick Thurston (clarinet), I would guess that the reason for the Three Whimsies might also have been an interpreter she collaborated with.

The Three Whimsies, with an overall duration of just three minutes, are delightful. Even within their aphoristic length, Swain manages to showcase her unique musical language and her quirky humour. The first piece, called 'Jig-Jog', is a prime example of this: starting off as an easy-going Irish dance, it soon seems to lose its direction, getting lost in strange harmonies before finding its way back on track. The slow movement, called 'Lament', lives up to its title. The Suite concludes with a 'Reel', a title Swain frequently used in her works, thus demonstrating her deep roots in British folk music.

All three pieces would make enjoyable encores and, when played together, would be an attractive addition to a concert programme. They are also suitable for more advanced students.

Freda Swain also provided for the possibility of performing the pieces on the clarinet.
